No, you do not need DirectX, but if you have it it should be version 5 or later for 1-Above-3D to use it.

1.6 do I need OpenGL?
No, 1-Above-3D supplies its own local copy of OpenGL. This is the software against which 1-Above-3D is tested so it has the best chance of working properly.

2 About 1-Above-3D:
2.1 how do I install 1-Above-3D?
Click on the download link from this Web site. The download file is a zip file. Once copied to your PC unzip it using a utility like WinZip or PKZip. Then find and run(open) the setup.exe file which is created in the folder you unzip to.

The setup program starts a wizard which takes you through a combined 1-Above-3D and ROOMS installation.

After the installation, look for 1-Above-3D in the list of screensavers in the Windows Display Properties applet.

2.2 whats all this stuff about ROOMS?
1-Above-3D uses the graphics software of a desktop package called "ROOMS" to view its worlds. So you need ROOMS installed on your PC for 1-Above-3D to work, but thats OK because ROOMS is installed at the same time as 1-Above-3D, they are bundled together.

2.3 how long can I use 1-Above-3D for free?
The free trial period is 14 days. After that 1-Above-3D wont run, but you still can use FreeWare ROOMS indefinitely.

2.4 how do I register?
Either click on the Register 1-Above-3D link on the Home page, or click on the link in the 1-Above-3D setup dialog (Register NOW!!! tab) and you will be taken straight to our secure on-line store.

The on-line store will ask for credit card details and then email you a license key which you enter in the Register NOW!! tab of the 1-Above-3D setup (1-Above-3D setup is what you get when you click the "Settings..." button from Windows Display Properties Applet/Screen Savers page).

2.5 how do I get a replacement license key?
The license key which we send you by email is time limited for security and you need to apply the key and your user ID as soon as you receive them from us.

If you need to re-apply your license (like if you have to rebuild your system and re-install all your software) contact us using the form on the About page and we will send you a replacement key. You will need to identify yourself by using the same email address as with your original order or let us have your order number so that we can verify the license against our records.

2.6 how do I uninstall 1-Above-3D?
You can add and remove the 1-Above-3D entry from the Windows Display Properties applet from the ROOMS setup program - the options tab. To remove 1-Above-3D completely you have to uninstall ROOMS. ROOMS is uninstalled from the Windows Add/Remove programs applet.

3 About ROOMS:
3.1 what is ROOMS?
ROOMS is a 3d desktop product - it gives you 3d wallpaper which you can move around in, and which contains 3d icons you can move among.

[Strictly speaking, ROOMS is multidimensional, but it is easiest explained in terms if 3D]

3.2 Do I have to install ROOMS to use 1-Above-3D?
ROOMS is bundled with 1-Above-3D, and everything is installed simply as a single package. 1-Above-3D uses the libraries which are delivered with ROOMS to do its drawing. If you do not have ROOMS it is installed automatically and painlessly. If you have an older version of ROOMS it gets upgraded.

3.3 Do I have to use ROOMS to use 1-Above-3D?
No, once ROOMS is installed you dont have to run it at all and you can still use 1-Above-3D.

3.4 I already have ROOMS, do I need to download 1-Above-3D?
If your version number (build number) of ROOMS is less than 400 then you need to download 1-Above-3D and that will update your ROOMS version for you.

If your version number of ROOMS is 400 or later then you already have the screensaver, which is bundled with later versions of ROOMS.

4 About 3D worlds:
4.1 where can I get more free worlds from?
From this Web site and from the ROOMS Web site (and from any friends who create ROOMS-compatible worlds, or anyone else who publishes them).

4.2 how can I create my own worlds?
FreeWare ROOMS allows you some customisation, like adding decorative icons to your world, but for full world creation you need the ROOMS Creator license (FreeWare includes a 14 day free trial of Creator functionality).

To create your own world you select the New World... option from the ROOMS right click popup menu. This launches the Room Wizard which takes you step by step through creation of the first room of your new world. Everything is done within world space, so when you complete the Room Wizard the room is created with you already inside it.

Thereafter you add new rooms to the world at connecting walls, floors and ceilings and you can save the world to file so it is available to you later.

5 Problems and errors:
5.1 I get an error when unzipping
One likely cause of unzip errors is corrupted download. So download again. Maybe use a download manager (try finding one from Google (search for free download manager)).

Some problems can be introduced by viruses on your PC which corrupt the zip file. Such are "CIH" and "spacefiller". So run a virus checker on your PC [up-to-date checkers found at www.symantec.com and www.mcafe.com].

Sometimes there are problems if the 1-Above-3D setup program is started automatically by your unzip program. This gives a "corrupted archive" message. The solution is to open/run setup directly from your Windows explorer - from the right-click popup menu.

5.2 Why does it crash/stop working/not run?
The screensaver will not work if you do not have enough disk space on C:. You need at least 50Mb free (without the screensaver running - test space usage by running ROOMS). If you do not have enough disk space the screensaver may report that you do not have the correct license, or it may tell you that you have run out of resources, or it may just crash. Sad but true.
